In-flight Services

What are In-Flight services?

In-Flight services allow TelstraClear GSM mobile customers to use their mobile devices during selected domestic and international flights.

How does it work?

In-Flight services are satellite based. When you make/receive calls, SMS or start a data session, a small cell site on the plane relays this to a satellite. The satellite then transmits the information to a base station on the ground which communicates with the mobile network infrastructure and establishes your call, SMS or data session to the mobile, landline or web server you’re trying to contact.

Will all mobile services be available to me?

You’ll be able to make/receive calls, send/receive SMS and use data services normally but unable to retrieve voice mail.

Can I use the service on any flight with any airline?

Currently there are a limited number of airlines that offer the In-Flight service:
Airlines
These airlines will also only offer the service on specific flights. To find out whether your flight has the In-Flight service available you’ll need to contact the airline. TelstraClear won’t be able to provide you with any information about this. Also, during some flights the airline may disable the service to reduce cabin noise.

What will it cost me to use?

There is no cost to receive an SMS however costs of other services depend on the airline used. All airlines listed except Emirates use the On-Air pricing shown in the table below. Emirates uses the Aeromobile pricing.

On-Air Pricing

Making a call $3.50/min
Receiving a call $2.00/min
Sending an SMS 80c per SMS
Data usage $20/mb
All prices inc gst

Aeromobile Pricing

Making a call $8.00/min
Receiving a call $8.00/min
Sending an SMS $1.00 per SMS
Data usage $30/mb
All prices inc gst

How do I get In-Flight services?

In-Flight services are a type of roaming service. If you’re a business customer then you’ll have this by default on your connection. If you’re a residential customer you’ll need to contact us to have roaming added to your connection.

What can I expect when using the service?

Using your mobile with the In-Flight service is virtually the same as how you’d normally call, SMS or use data. However as the service is delivered by satellite, you may notice delays of up to 3 seconds on some voice calls.

Can I use my normal TelstraClear GSM mobile handset?

Yes. If you can currently use your GSM handset with TelstraClear you’ll be able to use this with the In-Flight service.

How will charges for the In-Flight service appear on my bill?

Any charges incurred will show under the Roaming section of your monthly invoice. The network/country ID will display as either On-Air or Aeromobile as per the pricing structures shown above.
