Telecommunications-based opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions?

The smart use of telecommunications provides opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Our parent company, Telstra, commissioned an independent report by Climate Risk Pty Ltd in 2007 on telecommunications-based opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

As well as exploring digital strategies to reduce Telstra’s own energy use, the report recognised opportunities for the telecommunications sector to help enterprises to achieve greater carbon emission reductions.

The report titled "Towards a High-Bandwidth, Low-Carbon Future: Telecommunications-based Opportunities to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions" established that telecommunications networks can play a nationally significant role to survive and prosper in a future carbon-constrained world.

The seven opportunities identified in the report to reduce greenhouse gas emissions included:

  1. Networked demand-side management to increase renewable energy use;
  2. Integrated personalised public transport;
  3. "In person" high-definition videoconferencing to improve business productivity;
  4. Presence-detecting services that turn off devices that are "on" but not being used;
  5. Real-time freight allocation systems to fill empty freight vehicles;
  6. Remote power management for appliances not in use or on "stand-by"; and
  7. Teleworking.

The opportunities identified in the report, if achieved, could reduce Australia's greenhouse gas emissions by an amount and pace that meets the Kyoto Protocol target, as well as generating up to $6.6 billion in annual financial saving for Australian households and businesses.

It is clear that real opportunities exist for leading edge telecommunications service to deliver sustained improvement.
