Voice Roaming

With BizMobile Roaming from TelstraClear, you are all set up and ready to go. All of our GSM/3G mobiles can roam when travelling.

Your TelstraClear GSM mobile works on most networks, but not all. Check the listing for the country you're going to. If their frequency is listed as 900 or 1800, you're definitely OK. If it's 1900, your mobile will need to be Tri band. If it's 850, it will need to be Quad band.

A note about roaming in Japan or Korea:
Unlike your TelstraClear mobile service which uses both 2G and 3G networks, Japan and Korea do not provide 2G services. If you already own a 3G handset you can use your existing handset to roam in either country. If your handset is 2G you have the option of renting a handset while in that country.

Not sure about your mobile? Your user manual should be able to tell you. If you find your mobile doesn't work at your destination, you might want to upgrade to a new one.

Upon arrival at your destination, your handset should automatically pick up a compatible network so you can make and receive calls and texts. All you really need to do yourself is set your mobile contacts for international roaming click here

Roaming is available in over 215 destinations for voice and 90 for data, so you can work, or play, almost anywhere in the world you want to.

With a single per minute rate for each country, you'll now know exactly what you'll be paying for each call you make and/or receive. It doesn’t matter what network or device you are using.

There is now a simple ‘in country’ and ‘out of country’ price for each country.

In country calls - calls made to mobiles and landlines in the same country you are in.

Out of country calls - calls made to other countries eg. back to New Zealand.

Remember that you pay to receive calls while roaming.

When you're overseas, the person calling you pays the same as they always do to call your New Zealand mobile.

You will be charged a flat fee of $1 per minute when receiving calls anywhere in the world. This charge is to cover their call to be forwarded to you overseas, and the charge for the local network to connect you as well.

Data Roaming

If you have a BlackBerry, Data Card or other mobile data device, you can get connected overseas as easily as you do at home. Over 100 countries have at least GPRS data, 50 have 3G data and 28 have 3G Broadband. It means you can connect to your email and the Internet securely, wherever you have coverage.

With a simple data pricing rate of $10 per MB (50c per MB for Australia), you'll now know exactly what you'll be paying for each MB you use. This means there is one simple price to all the destinations we data roam to, no matter what network or device you are using.

Select your destination from the information below to check network and roaming information.

Data Roaming Tips

Roaming data is incredibly convenient, but at 10c for each 10KB, it can be expensive. It's important to optimise your usage to avoid a shock when you see your bill. (For example, if your laptop conscientiously downloaded the latest 40MB Microsoft security update in the background without you realising, it could easily cost $400.) See below for some tips for using data while roaming.

  • Turn data roaming off when abroad to avoid substantial roaming charges when using email, MMS, web browsing and other data services
  • Disable any auto (silent) updates in Windows or Anti-virus software
  • Ensure your computer virus/spyware scanner is up to date - keep your computer healthy
  • Optimise your email before you leave - you can restrict attachments, disable auto send & receive and disable auto-preview
  • Block pop up windows if browsing the internet
  • Avoid websites with heavy media content e.g. streaming video or audio
  • Disconnect your data session when finished
  • Use your handset for previewing all emails and your laptop to work on specific email
  • Consider dedicated email devices such as BlackBerry
  • Email - If you have a WAP-capable mobile you can send and receive email from over 60 countries. Using these services while overseas is exactly the same as using them in New Zealand
